I remember several months ago I was asked to give a devotion on a Wednesday night to our church. Now look, I'm not a pastor. I don't pretend to be a pastor. I don't want to be a pastor, but I do love Bible teaching and I do love being able to take the things that God has shown me and pass along to you. That's why I love this show. And I was able to do that

with a group of people on a Wednesday night. And again, I love Wednesday nights at our church because Wednesday nights are such a collection of people at different spiritual levels. You've got the diehards that are gonna be there every time the doors are open, so they are there. But then you've also got a bunch of couples in all kinds of age ranges that have dropped off their kids for our kids' ministry stuff that we do on Wednesday night. And instead of going home, they come

and participate in this Bible study. So we've got people that are, you know, decades in their walk with Jesus, and then maybe even some people that don't even know Christ as Savior yet. So it's a wonderful opportunity and it's a blessing that I get to do every so often. So anyway, I was having a chance to do that one time and I did an open response. I said, let's think about this. If you had an opportunity,

to hang out with someone that was in the Bible, to be a friend of theirs, to be an eyewitness of everything that they did, who would it be? And of course, we had to immediately take Jesus off the table because everybody would have wanted that, including me. I said, let's think a little bit harder on it. And we got some of the typical responses, you know, Paul and Peter and John, and some people said John the Baptist. One lady even said Ruth.

from the Old Testament. We had a David from the Old Testament given as well. And I thought, okay, those are great. But then I said, let me tell you about a person that I can't wait to meet when I get to heaven. At some point in eternity, I want to spend some time with this guy. And his name is Asaph. Now look, I know you've probably never heard of him, but you need to know about Asaph. Asaph was a guy in the Old Testament. He was handpicked by King David.

to lead worship at the tabernacle and then later on when the temple was built, he was leading worship there. And not only was he like the worship leader, but he oversaw all the worship. So this is a guy who had a great relationship with God, who was a godly person, and yet he ran into some hard obstacles. And I don't know if you know this or not, but Asaph wrote several Psalms that are in our Bible.

And one of the Psalms is Psalm 73. And Asaph starts that Psalm by saying, surely, meaning no doubt, absolutely, God has been good to Israel. And I think we can extrapolate that out to us, can't we? God has been so good to us as individuals and as our church families. However, Asaph goes on to list things about the ungodly and about how kind of jealous

he was of the ungodly because they get away with everything. They don't pay one bit of attention to what God says and they're prospering. They don't have any lack of food. They don't have any lack of wealth. They don't have any lack of power and of influence. And Asaph looks around and says, why should I...

keep doing what I'm doing? Why should I continue to be living this godly life and disciplining myself and saying no to some pleasurable things and saying no to myself in general? Why should I keep doing that? When those that aren't following Jesus, or at least in this time aren't following God, they're prospering. And here I am struggling to make ends meet. Can you relate? Boy, I sure could. In fact,

The more times I read that, the more I became enamored with this psalm. It's become my favorite psalm of them all. And Asaph lists all of these reasons why the ungodly are prospering and how unjust that is. And it's in the midst of all this that Asaph stops and he says, it wasn't until I entered the house of the Lord that I realized they're in.

Now wait a minute, wasn't until he entered the house of the Lord, he's there every week. He's the guy that leads worship for crying out loud. What does he mean by that? Well, I think he is talking about not just going to church, but worshiping. Because there's a difference between spectating and participating. Can I get an amen, somebody? a staff leader, somebody that was looked up to as a godly person, he finally came to the point where he was worshipping. And he realized that, temporarily, the ungodly, they may have it made right now. They may have everything that we would kind of desire to have because we feel like, we're following God and God ought to bless us in that way. But eternity speaking, there's no comparison.

ASAP is like, I know what's awaiting them eternally. They don't believe, they don't care, and they have made their decision. I believe, I care, and I have made my decision, and eternity is going to be much greater for me than it is for them. So, yes, they can have their temporary. I'm going to focus on the eternal. And once we do that, that changes everything. So can you relate to ASAP?

after Spider-Man came out and the big release and it's making a gazillion dollars. This is kind of a quiet week at the box office. Yeah. It's almost like Hollywood just, just took a big deep breath and exhaled. Yeah. Ooh, wow. We are done with that. So yeah, there has been a lot of afterthoughts sort of rolling into theaters the last couple of weeks. We have a big one next week that we've actually seen that's Coyote versus Acme.

which I know a lot of people will be excited about. But for now, the pickings are a little bit slim, especially for family friendly stuff. Probably the best, best that we've got here is the magic far away tree, which is PG movie that is in fairly limited release. If you're in a small town, chances are you won't necessarily be able to see it. But it does have some nice, nice messages. It features a pretty strong cast.

Claire Foy, who some people might remember from The Crown, is in it. She stars alongside Andrew Garfield, who's been nominated for two Oscars. They are parents of kids, and this is an issue that is near and dear to Plugged In's heart. Their kids are a little bit screen-obsessed. Oh, yeah. They spend way too much time on screens. And so they decide to make a wanton change in their lifestyle. They move out into the country.

This faraway tree is magic, of course, and it becomes a portal to a whole bunch of other lands. This PG movie has obviously a lot of magical elements. It's right there in the title. by some of the spirituality, know, the quasi-spirituality that we see. The kids actually have to chant, believe, in magic three times, which I think will rub a lot of parents the wrong way. But at the same time, it has some great messages. As we said, that idea of taking screen time seriously is near and dear to our heart. It's also great to see such a strong family and such a strong marriage that sort of the

of that family. know, Claire and Andrew's characters, they love each other and that love only grows stronger as the movie goes along. And that's really encouraging to see. Well, I bet it is because, I mean, it's sad to think that, you know, strong marriages and good fatherly and motherly role models in movies aren't there anymore. But I guess it's a reflection of society. That's what they would say.

If you're not just one of those people that nerd out over it, you don't really know about them. Because I sit there and I'm watching, I'm confused, and I have to ask my 12-year-old, hey, what's this? What's up? Because they get it. They understand it. But I got to tell you, you need to go see Spider-Man because it's a great standalone movie. I thought it was perfectly well done. You didn't have to be a Marvel insider to catch all the references and to know. They told the story.

I think I saw some stats that it has sold more than 10 times the copies of its nearest competitor on the music chart. So you know that that pedal is getting a lot of listens. It doesn't hurt that Grande has been in the news so much lately. She announced that she's stepping away from the public eye in part because of the scrutiny.

That has been paid to her weight But she's still making a ton of money from from pedal and she delivers some interesting messages in that in that album And I got to tell you the messages aren't necessarily that great It's an angry album. It really takes even her fans to task She is when she speaks she talks about how much she loves her fans

Pedal gives a little bit of a different message in a lot of ways. It is profane, it has references to drug use, it definitely talks about a lot of one-night stands, if you will. These are issues that I think, especially because Grande really appeals to, as you say, girls of a certain age. That's something that parents need to be aware of. you know, kid or even teen friendly. Yeah. And we don't live in Kansas anymore. It used to be, you would have these child stars that your kids grew up with and then they would make a pop album or something. And it was just, you know, just regular singing about normal type things. And it just, it just isn't that way anymore. Cause I, and Ariana Grande holds a little place in my family's heart because my kids grew up watching, uh, victorious and I and I would tell my kids, I was watching the show.

with them and I found entertainment in the show and I kept telling them, said, look, they have missed the boat on this. The redheaded girl, she's the star. She's the one that's got the voice. and, and it's the first time I've ever been right in calling something like that. But my, my kids, my kids all give me credit for saying, yeah, dad got that one right. Ariana Grande is this, it was the breakout star there. But anyway, uh, we're talking with Paul AC. is from plugged in.

And we're just reviewing some of the stuff that's online and not only online, but in theaters and stuff too, that you might be consuming. And when you talk about some of the things from these child stars, the franchise that is maybe the most known is Camp Rock and it is coming back. Camp Rock 3 is on the horizon. Camp Rock 3 is actually playing on Disney plus right now. Oh, is it? Okay.

Yeah, I tell you what, when we talk about it, it is a great segue because, know, Ariana Grande, she was one of those starlets that came up through Nickelodeon, actually. But Disney has long been this factory for these up and coming singer actors that have just sort of exploded on the scene. And if you can think way, way, way back to the original Camp Rock, it launched really the careers of a couple of really important acts. And that was Demi Lovato and the Jonas Brothers.

They, Demi played this girl named Mitchie who sort of got into a relationship with the character named Shane Gray, who was played by Joe Jonas. That sort of really put them both on the map. I think the Jonas Brothers were pretty popular before then, but it brought them up another level. Now everybody's back. The Jonas Brothers make an appearance. We do have a little cameo from Demi Lovato herself, but we're

dealing with a new group of kids, another talented group of kids who want to sing and dance and act to their way to stardom. Camp Rock is this place that, that in the fictional world that it's set in, has launched so many careers and everybody who goes pretty much wants to be a star or they just love music. And the main focal point is someone who loves stardom more than almost anything else. Her name is Sage.

She finds that her love of stardom is getting away in the way of some of her relationships, which is a nice message as far as it goes. For families, Camp Rock 3, it is pretty clean. You won't find very much problematic content. This is as innocuous as the show can get. You don't even really have any strong language to speak of. There's no violence. Two characters almost kiss, but they're prevented from doing so.

But I do think that sometimes these stories, especially stories that come from Disney, really sort of, the worldview is almost something that we need to pay more attention to than the actual content issues. Because the worldview, it does tend to elevate this idea of stardom. It elevates this idea of pursue your dreams, regardless of what other people say. And there's a place for that. There's a context for that.

But I think it needs to be shaped really for parents because if you take those messages to extreme, can make, they can push in a much more selfish direction, a much more me serving direction. And as Christians, you know, we're not supposed to be about me. We're supposed to be about God. We're supposed to be about other people. So those messages within context, they can be managed, but it really takes, I think, a parental hand.

to help guide kids through those messages. See, I think that's such an excellent point because again, with the original kind of camp rock, my daughter especially was watching it and singing all the songs at the top of her lungs and playing it all through the house. We didn't have to really worry so much about that, but over those what, 25 years it's been or whatever, or maybe not that long, maybe 10 or 15 years, it's changed. You're right. I really get that. But there are a group of people that are looking forward to 2027, I'm sorry, 2030, where they say this is Jesus' year that He got baptized because

And so they're going to have preparations there at the Jordan River in a spot where they think is where it actually took place. And who knows how commercial this thing is going to be. Am I right? Can you imagine people selling t-shirts and hats and like doing live video streams of people getting baptized in the Jordan River where Jesus was baptized? I can see it all.

It could be really reverent, it could be a really well thought out and well done thing, but I'm so afraid it's going to hit that slippery slope and just be another commercial outlet. I know that there's some good-hearted people working on this and I truly, truly hope that it does become something worthy of worship and being a holy deal, but I just know people. Having this verse in between our ears will help us when times get tough, when times are the hardest, when we feel like we are just at our end, we can mentally go back and get this verse and pull it out and realize that not only is God not through with us yet, but He's got so much more in store for us. from Isaiah chapter 64 when he says this. So that's how important God thinks that it is for us to know that. He put it in both the Old and the New Testaments. So I hope you've got it down. If you don't, it's not too late. All you have to do is memorize it. Just take some time to spend with God's Word by yourself. Whether that's just reading it over and over again, maybe you've got to read it out loud to yourself.
