What happens when the faith you were taught collides with the pain you actually experience?
Steve Marston welcomes pastor, evangelist, author and “Rock & Roll Reverend” Brady Weldon for an honest conversation about deconstruction, reconstruction, church hurt, suffering and learning to trust Jesus when life no longer makes sense.
Brady says many Christians who appear to be “deconstructing” their faith aren’t necessarily trying to walk away from Jesus. Instead, they’re wrestling with difficult questions created by real-life experiences—loss, addiction, divorce, disappointment, unanswered prayer and hurt caused by people within the church.
There’s an important distinction between questioning Scripture and questioning our understanding of what we’ve been taught about Scripture. Pain has a way of testing our theology, and sometimes faith means admitting that we don’t have a neat answer while continuing to trust the One at the center of our faith.
Steve and Brady discuss why Christians need safe places to ask hard questions without being shamed for asking them, why we shouldn’t confuse disappointment with Christians for disappointment with Christ, and how simply sitting beside someone in their suffering can sometimes be more powerful than offering easy Christian clichés.
As Brady puts it, we’re not tearing everything down—we’re bringing the broken pieces back to the foot of the cross and reconstructing an honest faith with Jesus at the center.
Plus, Brady discusses his book The Undoing of Not Doing, now available in audiobook form, and its challenge to overcome hesitation and procrastination before they rob us of the future God has placed before us.
