From Basketball to the Pulpit: Ken Hicks on Faith, Family & Living on Mission

What happens when knowing about Jesus becomes truly knowing Jesus?

Steve Marston welcomes Ken Hicks, pastor of Heights Community Church in San Antonio, for a conversation about faith, calling, family, and what it means to live on mission wherever God places you.

Ken grew up in a Christian home and knew the Bible, attended church, and did all the things a “good Christian kid” was supposed to do. But at age 15, during a church camp, something changed. His faith moved from information and education to genuine transformation as he began a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Ken also shares the unexpected journey that took him from playing and coaching college basketball into full-time ministry. What he initially thought would be one year serving at a church ultimately became a calling that has now spanned more than three decades. Along the way, God even allowed Ken to continue using his love of sports through sports ministry and coaching.

The conversation also explores Ken's approach to co-vocational ministry. At Heights Community Church, ministry leaders intentionally maintain careers and businesses outside the church, creating additional opportunities to take the Gospel into the community while allowing more church resources to be directed toward Kingdom work.

Ken discusses his passion for building stronger marriages and healthier families, including his work through 360 Enrichment, and explains why strengthening the family can have an impact far beyond the walls of the church.
