Why Should Christians Support Israel? | Jim Scudder on Biblical Zionism

Why should Christians care about Israel? Is supporting Israel primarily a political issue—or is there a biblical and theological reason Christians should pay attention to the Jewish people and the land of Israel?

Steve Marston sits down with Bible teacher, pastor, author, and adventurer Jim Scudder to discuss his book, The Spiritual War Against Israel: Defending Biblical Zionism and Understanding Israel’s Place in God’s Prophetic Plan.

Jim traces the biblical case back to God’s covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, arguing that God’s promises concerning Israel have not expired. The conversation explores the significance of Romans 9–11, the meaning of biblical Zionism, Israel’s return to the land, and why Scudder believes modern Israel should be viewed through a biblical lens rather than only through contemporary politics.

Steve and Jim also discuss archaeological evidence connected to biblical accounts such as Jericho, the remarkable preservation and revival of Jewish identity and the Hebrew language, and the Old Testament prophets’ repeated promises concerning Israel’s future.

But the conversation goes beyond theology and prophecy. Jim shares his personal journey of building relationships with Chicago’s Jewish community and explains why he believes Christians should demonstrate the love of Jesus through genuine friendship and care for Jewish people—as they should toward people of every background.

In this conversation:

What is biblical Zionism?

Did God’s covenant with Israel expire?

What do Romans 9–11 say about Israel?

What can biblical archaeology tell us about Scripture?

Why is Israel so prominent in biblical prophecy?

How should Christians think about modern Israel without endorsing every action of its government?

Why does Jim Scudder describe hostility toward the Jewish people as a “spiritual war”?

How can Christians build meaningful relationships with Jewish neighbors?

Jim Scudder is pastor of Quentin Road Baptist Church and Bible teacher for InGrace.
